Honda Spark Plugs
Odds are you don’t pay much attention to the spark plugs in your Honda. That’s a good thing. It means they’re doing their job. The spark plugs in your vehicle produce the flash that ignites the air/fuel mixture produced by an internal combustion engine.
How Your Plugs Work
They do so by generating an arc of electricity that jumps across the gap between two leads. If you drive an older Honda model with a diesel engine, though, it doesn’t use spark plugs to initiate combustion. They use glowplugs instead. A heating element in the tip of the glowplug ignites the fuel mist that is sprayed into the cylinder. This reduces the cranking time needed to start your engine. Whether your engine uses spark plugs or glowplugs, it came with the factory-installed Honda plugs designed to work best. However, even these high-quality plugs can start to fail. This may be due to the gaps between the leads widening, or corrosion. At this point your engine is operating with reduced efficiency and may start misfiring. Before you blame the alternator, check to make sure your spark plugs are still in good condition.Warning Signs of Bad Plugs
>If your spark plugs start to weaken, you may notice these signs:
- Issues with starting
- The "Check Engine" light comes on
- Uneven idling
- Misfiring engine
- Reduced fuel economy
These days, you can expect your spark plugs to have a lifespan of 100,000 miles or so. Still, you should always check your owner’s manual to be sure. You don’t want to let them go past their rated mileage, because that can lead to engine issues. When it is time to change your spark plugs, make sure to only choose the high-quality OEM options that are designed for your Honda and its engine. You’ll find them in stock from our online parts department, ready to be shipped once you place your order. Buy today and save!
